Masterclass with Cristian Măcelaru

The 19th edition of the George Enescu International Competition brings an innovative element to its structure: a Masterclass of Conducting, Instrumental Performance and Advanced Music Study. which will take place from September 23rd to 27th, 2024. This initiative continues its mission of supporting and promoting young talents by encouraging artistic excellence.

For the first time in the history of the Enescu Competition, a new dimension is added, that of conducting, thus reflecting the rich contribution of the great George Enescu in all musical spheres where he excelled: composer, violinist, pianist, conductor, and educator. The Masterclass of conducting interpretation, instrumental performance, and advanced music study includes workshops designed for young musicians specializing in conducting, violin, cello, or piano.

Following the operational model of the George Enescu International Competition, inspired by the life of the artist whose name it bears, the Masterclass of conducting interpretation, instrumental performance, and furthering in the study of music represents a platform where young musicians, instrumentalists, or conductors, are guided in developing a successful career in the field of classical music by practicing and improving their interpretative skills.

The workshops will be conducted by Maestro Cristian Măcelaru, with the participation of the Romanian Youth Orchestra. All sessions will take place at the Romanian Athenaeum, in Bucharest, Romania.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Masterclass of conducting interpretation and advanced music study:

  • Participants must be born after August 1st, 1989.
  • There are no ideological, linguistic, political, religious, or racial restrictions for participant acceptance.
  • Candidates can apply for active or passive participation.
  • The deadline for active participation registration is June 7th, 2024.
  • The deadline for passive participation registration is June 30th, 2024.

Masterclass of instrumental interpretation and advanced music study:

  • Participants must be born after August 1st, 1999.
  • There are no ideological, linguistic, political, religious, or racial restrictions for participant acceptance.
  • Candidates can apply for active or passive participation.
  • The deadline for active participation registration is June 30th, 2024.
  • The deadline for passive participation registration is June 30th, 2024.

Registration and Participation Fees:

  • Registration Fee for both Masterclasses: Involves the processing of documents for active or passive participation and amounts to 100 euros.
  • The 6 candidates selected by the maestro to actively participate in the Masterclass of Conducting Interpretation and Music Study Enhancement are exempt from the participation fee.
  • The passive participation fee for the Masterclass of Conducting Interpretation and Music Study Enhancement is paid separately from the registration fee and amounts to 350 euros.
  • No participation fee is charged for the Instrumental Interpretation Masterclass.
  • Individuals wishing to participate in both masterclasses are required to register and pay the registration fee for each one separately.

REGISTRATION

Candidates can register for active or passive participation by completing the registration form.

In case a candidate encounters technical issues during online registration, they must inform the Organizer by sending an email to [email protected], so that the registration can be officially accepted on time.

All the conducting masterclass participants are required to come prepared with this repertoire.

Masterclass of instrumental interpretation and advanced music study

During the masterclass sessions, each participant will approach a single work of their choice. The participant will perform solo (without piano or orchestra accompaniment).

FACILITIES

  • During the masterclass participation, the organizer provides free accommodation for active participants.
  • Active participants will be accommodated in single rooms in hotels located at a reasonable walking distance from the Masterclass venue.
  • Hotel rooms will be provided to active participants from September 22nd to September 28th (6 nights).
  • The organizer will not offer free accommodation for passive participants, but can facilitate hotel reservation upon the participant’s express request, made at the time of registration for the Masterclass.
  • The organizer will not provide free accommodation for personal companions or legal guardians accompanying the participant, but can facilitate reservation in the same hotel as the participant, upon the participant’s express request made at the time of registration for the Masterclass.
  • The organizer will not provide free accommodation for participants residing in Bucharest or nearby communities, within a distance of up to 50 kilometers.
  • All transportation costs will be supported by the participants
