In celebration of the 66th anniversary of the inaugural George Enescu Festival and Competition, esteemed Lithuanian cellist David Geringas, the head of the cello section jury, will perform an extraordinary recital. This event is scheduled for Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at 7:00 PM, at the Romanian Athenaeum. Geringas will be accompanied by pianist Mikhail Mordvinov.

Recital Program:

David Geringas, a cellist, conductor, and founder of the Geringas Chamber Orchestra, is recognized as one of today’s most influential musicians. He bridges Eastern European and Western cello traditions, having studied under Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory and winning the Gold Medal at the 1970 Tchaikovsky Competition. His illustrious career includes multiple prestigious awards such as the Echo Klassik (twice) and the Grand Prix du Disque for his recordings of Boccherini’s 12 Cello Concertos, conducted by Bruno Giuranna.

Numerous contemporary composers have dedicated works to Geringas, and his extensive discography exceeds 120 recordings. A devoted educator, he has taught many renowned cellists, including Gustav Rivinius, Jens Peter Maintz, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Monica Leskovar, Tatjana Vassiljeva, Jing Zhao, Johannes Moser, Maximilian Hornung, Valentin Răduțiu, and Sol Gabetta. Since 2005, he has been a professor at the Chigiana Music Academy in Siena. In 2023, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Classical Music Awards, hailed as “a passionate musician with a brilliant mind, an example of what the music world needs in these challenging times.”
