David Geringas – cello jury president

David Geringas (b. 1946, Vilnius, Lithuania), cellist, conductor and founder of an ensemble for young artists, Geringas Chamber Orchestra, is one of today’s most influential musicians, considered a true bridge between Eastern European and Western cello traditions. A student of Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory and winner of the Gold Medal at the 1970 Tchaikovsky Competition, he has won prestigious awards throughout his career, including twice Echo Klassik and Grand Prix du Disque for his recordings of Boccherini’s 12 Cello Concertos conducted by Bruno Giuranna. Famous contemporary composers have dedicated several works to him and his discography includes over 120 discs. For many years he dedicated himself to teaching, and among his students in his legendary cello class are Gustav Rivinius, Jens Peter Maintz, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Monica Leskovar, Tatjana Vassiljeva, Jing Zhao, Johannes Moser, Maximilian Hornung, Valentin Răduțiu and Sol Gabetta. Since 2005 he has been teaching at the Chigiana Academy of Music in Siena. In 2023 he won the Lifetime Career Prize of the International Classical Music Awards, described as “a passionate musician, a brilliant mind, an example of what the music world needs in these difficult times”.
In 2023, David Geringas published a German-language volume, Sag das niemandem, also translated into Italian as Non dirlo a nessuno.
