Violin Section Rules

I. CALENDAR

The George Enescu Internatonal Violin Competition consists of two eliminatory rounds, semifinal and final.
The drawing of lots will take place on September 9, 2016.

The first round (eliminatory) will take place on September 10, 11 and 12, 2016.
Duration of the programme: approx. 25 minutes.

The second round (eliminatory) will take place on September 14 and 15, 2016.
Duration of the programme: approx. 50 minutes.

Semifinal will take place on September 17, 2016.
Duration of the programme: 50 minutes.

The rehearsal with the orchestra for the final round will take place on September 18, 2016.
The final round will take place on September 19, 2016.
The results of each Round will be announced by the Competition Secretariat after the end of each, immediately after the ruling of the Jury.

II. REPERTOIRE

The repertoire included in the registration form by the competitor is final and cannot be changed.
Each competitor will establish the order of the works to be performed in each round.
The repertoire shall be performed without scores, except Sonatas for violin and piano and works composed by George Enescu.

First Round 

1. J.S. Bach – a work chosen by the competitor among:
– Adagio and Fugue from Sonata in g minor for Solo violin
– Grave and Fugue from Sonata in a minor for Solo violin
– Ciaccona fom Partita in D minor for Solo violin
– Adagio and Fugue from Sonata in C Major for Solo violin

2. Mozart: 1st movement with Cadenza from one of the following violin Concertos: no. 3 G Major KV 216 OR no. 4 D Major KV 218 OR no. 5 A Major KV 219

3. Paganini: one Caprice chosen by the competitor

Second round

1. A work chosen by the competitor among:
– Schubert: Rondo Brillant for violin and piano in B minor, D 895/op.70
– Schubert: Rondo in A Major for violin and piano, D 438
– Schubert: Fantasie op.131 in C Major, D 934
– Beethoven: Any violin Sonata

2. Enescu: Menétrier (The Fiddler) – opening movement of the “Impressions d’enfance” Suite Op. 28

3. One complete work of free choice for solo violin or for violin and piano

The length of this session is not to exceed 45 minutes.

Semifinal

1. A Sonata for violin and piano chosen by the competitor among:
– Brahms: Sonata No. 1, Sonata No. 2, Sonata No. 3
– Franck
– Fauré
– Grieg: Sonata No. 3
– Ravel
– Hindemith: Sonata No. 1
– Debussy
– Strauss.

2. Enescu: A complete work chosen by the competitor among:
– Sonata no. 2 Op. 6 in F minor for violin an piano
– Sonata no. 3 Op. 25 in A minor “in Romanian folk character” for
violin and piano
– Suite “Impressions d’enfance” Op. 28 for violin and piano.

3. A virtuoso work chosen by the competitor among the following
composers: Sarasate, Paganini, Saint-Saëns, Ernst, Ravel, Wieniawski, Schnittke, Milstein, Waxman, Tchaikovsky.

Final (with orchestra)

A concerto for violin and orchestra chosen by the competitor among the following composers:
Beethoven, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Paganini (Concerto no. 1 or Concerto no. 2), Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Prokofiev, Shostakovich (Concerto no. 1), Lalo (Symphonie Espagnole), Bruch (Concerto no. 1 or Concerto no. 3), Khatchaturian, Dvorak, Elgar, Bartók (Concerto no. 2).
