Cello Section Rules

I. CALENDAR

The George Enescu Internatonal Cello Competition consists of two eliminatory rounds, semifinal and final.

The drawing of lots will take place on September 3, 2016.

The first round (eliminatory), will take place on September 4, 5 and 6, 2016.
Duration of the programme: approx. 25 minutes.

The second round (eliminatory), will take place on September 8 and 9, 2016.
Duration of the programme: approx. 40 minutes.

The Semifinal will take place on September 11, 2016.
Duration of the programme: approx. 40 minutes.

The rehearsal with the orchestra for the final round of the Competition will take place on September 12, 2016.

The Final round will take place on September 13, 2016.

The results of each Round will be announced by the Competition Secretariat after the end of each, immediately after the ruling of the Jury.

II. REPERTOIRE

The repertoire included in the registration form by the competitor is final and cannot be changed.
Each competitor will establish the order of the works to be performed in each round.
The repertoire shall be performed without scores, except Sonatas for Cello and Piano and works composed by George Enescu.

First Round

1. A Caprice or Etude chosen by the competitor, among:
– Alfredo Piatti op.25 (no.2, 6 or 10)
– David Popper op.73 (no.29 or 33)

2. Bach - a Prelude chosen by the competitor from:
– Suites no.4, 5 or 6

3. Haydn – The first part with Cadenza chosen by the competitor among the following Concertos:
– Concerto no.1 in C Major (Hob VII b:1)
– Concerto no.2 in D Major (Hob VII b:2)

Second Round

1. A work chosen by the competitor among:
– Schubert: Arpeggione Sonata
– Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Sonata op.58 no.2 in D Major

2. A solo piece chosen by the competitor among:
– Ligeti: Sonata for Solo Cello
– Hindemith: Sonata op.25 no.3 for Solo Cello
– Penderecki: Divertimento for Solo Cello
– Crumb: Sonata for Solo Cello

Semifinal

1. Enescu: Sonata in F minor ( posthumous work)

2. A virtuosity piece chosen by the competitor among:
– David Popper: Elfentanz, Spinning Song
– Karl Davydov: At the Fountain
– M. Rostropovich: Humoresque op.5

3. A piece chosen by the competitor among:
– Debussy: Sonata in d minor for Cello and Piano
– Britten: Sonata op.65 in C major for Cello and Piano

Final (concert with orchestra)

A Concerto for Cello and Orchestra chosen by the competitor among: Dvorak, Elgar, Prokofiev (Simfonia Concertante in E minor op.125), Shostakovich (Concerto no. 1 op. 107), Enescu (Simfonia Concertante op.8).
